Percent in Poverty

The percent in poverty states the number of individuals living below the poverty line as a percentage of the total population in the area. The poverty threshold is determined each year by the Census Bureau.

The poverty rate in Richland County has been on a steady decline since 2012.  This followed a period of an increasing poverty rate from 2010-2012 when it reached 18.4%. However, the most recent data from 2016 shows the poverty rate at 15.8%, a year-over-year increase of 0.7 percentage points from 2015. The poverty rate in Richland County is just above the poverty level in Ohio at 14.5% in 2016.

An increasing percent of people in poverty is an indication of poor economic conditions and insufficient economic opportunities available to members of the local community. Tracking the percent in poverty over time gives a good indication of the number of community members who are eligible for federal assistance programs.

Green: Year-over-year decrease of greater than 2%
Yellow: Year-over-year ± 0-2%
Red: Year-over-year increase of greater than 2%
