This chart shows that while the number of establishments has not significantly decreased, the companies that did leave Richland County had a disproportional impact on the loss of jobs. The trend of jobs added has been mostly positive since 2010, despite a decrease in the number of establishments since 2010. This means that the remaining establishments have been expanding their work forces in the midst of consolidation of establishments in the manufacturing industry.
Number of Manufacturing Employees: Estimate of stable jobs (i.e., the number of jobs that are held on both the first and last day of the quarter with the same employer in the manufacturing industry)
Number of Manufacturing Establishments: The Bureau of Labors Statistics defines manufacturing establishments as the number of physical locations that are classified by the NAICS manufacturing code 31-33.
The manufacturing industry has historically been the leading employer in Richland County. This chart compares two factors, the number of manufacturing establishments and the number of manufacturing employees, to determine the growth of manufacturing establishments in comparison to the number of employees the industry is adding.
